Preeti vs Unicode: Choose the Right Text Workflow illustration

Choose a typing method by the document you need to produce. Preeti is a legacy font workflow; Unicode stores Nepali characters using a shared character standard. Neither your speed nor the appearance of one sample determines which format your recipient needs.

1. What is stored in the document?

In a Preeti document, Latin and extended characters are displayed as Nepali glyphs by the Preeti font. For example, g]kfn displays as नेपाल when the matching font is applied. Changing the font can reveal those underlying Latin characters. In Unicode, नेपाल is stored as Devanagari characters and a compatible font draws them.

The Unicode character क is U+0915, named DEVANAGARI LETTER KA. Unicode is the character standard, not a keyboard or a particular font. Romanized and Traditional Unicode keyboards can produce the same text through different key positions.

2. Compare the workflow

3. A simple font-versus-encoding check

  1. Make a copy of a document before changing anything.
  2. Select a short known word and change its font to a regular Latin font.
  3. If नेपाल turns into a string such as g]kfn, you are looking at legacy font-encoded text. If its stored characters remain Devanagari, it is likely Unicode; missing boxes can indicate font support rather than a need to convert.
  4. Do not convert an entire document solely because its font name looks unfamiliar. Mixed documents may contain both formats.

4. Which NepalType mode should you practise?

For an existing Preeti office workflow, start with Preeti practice. For modern Unicode text, compare Romanized and Traditional Unicode using the displayed keyboards. Choose the layout your class, employer or examination uses. Standard Traditional has its own key coverage and should not be treated as interchangeable with the other modes.

Romanized is a fixed keymap, not automatic translation of chat spellings. Knowing how to write a word in Roman Nepali does not mean every spelling will produce that word through a Romanized keyboard.

5. Convert a copy, then verify it

Use the font converter when the receiving workflow needs a different encoding. First try a short passage that contains a vowel sign, a conjunct, punctuation and a number. For example, inspect नेपाल and कि rather than checking only an isolated क.

  1. Keep the original unchanged.
  2. Select the correct conversion direction.
  3. Compare word by word, especially ि, र combinations, quotation marks and mixed English text.
  4. Check any incomplete-conversion notice. Copying a result does not prove every character converted correctly.
  5. Check paragraph breaks and styling in your destination application. Text conversion is not a guarantee of document formatting preservation.

6. Examination requirements are specific

There is no single font, duration or pass speed that applies to every government job. Find the syllabus and practical-test notice for your post and year. Write down the permitted layout, font, duration, correction rules and marking method before practising. NepalType is an independent practice tool and does not certify that your score meets an examination's marking rules.
